Beacon SchoolFacing relocation, the City Schools of Decatur needed new offices for administration and training. Rutledge Alcock assessed the condition of an existing 1950’s high school building for adaptive re use as a new loft-like office space for City Schools staff. After extensive programming studies, the high school was stripped to its concrete frame and construction began on this 25,000 sf building. Features include training room, school board meeting spaces and an open volume created between first and second floor for greater communication between staff. Natural light is used as much as possible, with metal perforated screens on the southern exposure to protect the interior of the building. The project is currently under construction and set to open in the fall of 2014. |
